Abstract: A new method of preparation of the ferrofluid for mineral processing was introduced. First, Fe3O4particles were obtained by oxidizing FeSO4only with the air, then the particles were collected with surfactant and dispersed into kerosene or water to prepare the kerosene based ferrofluid or water based ferrofluid. The properties (stability, viscosity, surface electricity, magnetism and apparent density) of the prepared ferrofluid were studied. The tests of separating minerals using the prepared ferrofluid as the separating medium showed that the ferrofluid has higher separating efficiency than that of paramagnetic salt solution.
