Abstract: A 3-D nonlinear coupled thermal-mechanical finite element model accounting for the temperature dependency of the thermal and mechanical properties of the material was presented. Based on the presented model, the edge effects by using the varying scanning velocity in laser bending were investigated. The results show that the deceleration scan scheme can sizably reduce the curvature of the bending edge. However, if the scanning velocity has a deceleration then followed by acceleration, the normal displacement of the plate at the free edge is found to be almost the same as that found in the case where the scanning velocity is constant.
